Editorial Assessment.

An editorial assessment consists of reading the completed manuscript and providing general recommendations. It is a cursory version of a full developmental edit. The assessment is given in the form of a short letter. Rate is $600.

Developmental Edit (a.k.a. Substantive Edit).

A developmental edit includes a thorough going-through of the manuscript, highlighting big-picture observations of your story. This service includes pinpointing areas that need additional work specific to: Characterization, Tone, Theme, Plot, and Pacing. Author will receive a comprehensive editorial letter outlining the strengths and weaknesses of the book and suggestions for how to fix particular problems. Notes are made within the Word document using the Track Changes feature. For exact estimate, contact me and I will request the first three chapters to review. Books that require more work take more time and will be charged a higher rate. Rate for this editorial service is $1,000–$3,000.

* For each additional round at this stage, the rate is one half the cost of the initial developmental edit.

Line Edit.

A line edit is a comprehensive examination of the manuscript at the micro level with the goal of improving the quality of writing. All edits are made using Track Changes and include, but are not limited to: tightening sentences, deleting redundancies, noting word echoes, clarifying murkiness, reducing wordiness, and making the manuscript CMS (Chicago Manual of Style, 17th ed.) compliant. This edit includes two complete rounds of editing. After round one, the author will review the edits and respond to any editorial queries. Round two is a fresh read to ensure the newest changes sync well with the final piece. This second round will also address any additional revisions.

Rate for this editorial service is $.025/word.

Copyedit.

A copyedit is similar to a line edit but the text is edited in one complete round, not two, and the author is responsible for accepting or rejecting any text changes. I recommend hiring a proofreader if you have your manuscript copyedited and not line edited. Rate for this editorial service is $.018/word.

Proofreading.

Once a manuscript is finalized, the stage of proofreading will catch any remaining errors such as missing words, incorrect punctuation, and tense inconsistency. Rate for this editorial service is $25/hour.

Estimates for story coaching are determined after a phone consultation.

Samples of any of these editorial services are available upon request.

*The rate for manuscripts over 90K words will increase. Also, inquire about pricing for titles with less than 50K words.
