My high school guidance counselor asked me what I wanted to do as a profession.
“I want to make books.” I’ve aimed my efforts toward that goal for the past thirty years.
I worked for a printer straight out of college, learning about picas, trapping, and typefaces. While I love the book-making process, I wanted to contribute to creating the words inside the book.
My next publishing job moved me out of academia into trade books where I was hired to manage the printing of materials: shelf-talkers, cardboard standups, bookmarks, the annual catalog. I learned more about publishing and held firm to my desire to contribute, not just in shaping the book as a whole—cover, title, design—but in the actual words on the page.
I got my big break in 2006 when an associate editor position opened up on the Fiction team and I went for it. I will never forget the day I was offered that job. I had finally made it. For the next 8 years, I edited a stable of authors who made my job fun. I followed after trends in the marketplace and made the company loads of money.
In 2012, I left my position as Fiction Acquisitions Editor and started my own gig: Hanemann Editorial. I’ve also picked up some new skills. In 2018 a company approached me to be a ghostwriter on a project and now have a dozen titles under my belt. I've recently had several articles published including for Verily Magazine and Catholic Stand. I'm finally writing the words on the page.
Life is good, business is good, and words still matter, which means no matter where the technology or trends take us, books aren't going anywhere.
